Since Livingroofs.org was launched in 2004 it has helped move the green roof movement forward. We have been actively promoting green roofs to such an extent that London now has a distinct green roof policy and other cities and areas in the UK are developing similar approaches to encourage the uptake of green roofs.

Green space is increasingly been seen as an important part of helping our cities to adapt and mitigate for the effects of climate change. Green roofs, living roofs and brown roofs are and will be an increasingly important technology. The ecosystems services that are provided by green roofs and living roofs will be especially important in regard a reduction in the Urban Heat Island [our summers are predicted to get much hotter] and help reduce the impact of flash summer storms that are predicted to increase as the climate changes. With 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity, green roofs will also provide an important refuge for wildlife in the UK urban environment.
